In 2021, MusterPoint was awarded a grant to fund and execute the GiddyUp Project under the AfriLabs Capacity Building Programme which is funded by AFD through the Digital Africa seed fund.
There is a gap in the creative space that needs to be bridged, typical amongst certain creative businesses is the lack of structure, funding, and scalability. As the industry continues to expand, not only are more creatives needed but ventures with a proper structure would scale and expand.
Creatives do not only require access to more funding opportunities, they need to be equipped with the requisite knowledge and support to further drive their expansion. GiddyUp was structured to address these gaps and take on a hands-on approach to empower them.
A call was made and we had an application from over 150 creatives who were shortlisted for this 1st cohort to a total of 31. They include: Bukola Afolabi(Content Creator and Graphics Designer), Faith Babatunde(Content Creator and Graphics Designer), Caleb Nwachinemere(Video Editor), Timothy Afie(Video editor, VFX, Animation), Samuel Oyewade(Graphics designer) Onuoha Uja(Photography), Abiodun Adeyemi(Graphics designer), Dorcas Animasaun(Content creator, Fashion designer, entrepenuer), Hassan Thompson(Cinematographer, Video editor), Olugbenga Lawal(Video editor), Daniel Okpata(web & Graphics designer), Kemisola Aguda(Virtual & Creative assistance services), Favour Adenuga(Content creator, Actor & entrepreneur), Oluwadamilola Ogundare(Graphics designer & Video editor), Uduak Ekpe(Social media manager), Taribor Ajuesi(Graphics & product designer), Olurotimi Dosunmu(Graphics designer & Content creator), Micheal Odoh(Graphics design), Bright Uchendu(Developer, science researcher & front end developer, web copy creator entreprenuer), Ogunjole Elijah(Product & Web designer), Quadiri Yusuf(creative work, & web design), Mosopeoluwa Adelekan(Social media & content creator), Iseoluwadoyin Emmanuel(Director, editor, & colorist), Laughter Atanda(Productuct designer, social Tech entrepreneur, & branding), Babatunde Olarinde(Photography), Stephen Nwabuko(Video editor), Esther Umoh(Graphics designer), Temitope Sani(Shoe-making & hair-stylist), Sunday Rajiola(Photography), Umar Idris(Graphics, Animation, & Production designer), Ngozi Inyang(Content creator & Social media manger)
The entire project lifecycle aims to not only provide a 6-week incubation period but also have a post-incubation strategy that ensures the creatives are supported for growth and viability. The post incubation period would provide a total of 25 registered businesses with product-market fit, business bank accounts and virtual office support from MusterPoint.
We look forward to scaling the project to a Cohort 2.0. Adebowale Majekodunmi, GiddyUp Project Manager shares this “Contrary to requests for grants and other forms of financial support, most creatives actually need to, first of all, understand the act of doing business and then put in place structures that ensure viability and growth. This is what we are doing with GiddyUp.’’
During the incubation program which was deployed both physically and virtually taking into account the schedule of each participant. However, we were delighted to have renowned business experts and professionals train and equip these creatives and special thanks to CafeOne by Sterling for providing necessary support as required.
Tunde Mclver, CEO, MusterPoint had this to say on the quality of project delivery “GiddyUp is playing a key role in educating creatives, powering the digital economy why they need to transition from a talent mindset to a business mindset. We are convinced that our work will unlock enormous value for creatives and enable them to begin their journey to sustainability and scalability.”
