A Day in the Life of a News Editor: Balancing Coffee and Content in our Innovative Hub.

We had a virtual one-on-one with him and got insights as to how his day goes and how the functionalities of an innovation hub boost his daily productivity.

He basically works round the clock, because they run two shifts; the Morning shift is between 6 am and 3 pm, and the Afternoon shift is between 3 pm and 11 pm.

Adedayo’s day is a whirlwind of activities aimed at delivering the latest news to your fingertips.

He gives us a concise run-through of his activities. Let’s dive in!

    Morning:

7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Morning Boost and Inbox Dive

The day begins bright and early at 7 AM as Adedayo strolls into the open-floor office, with bright-coloured desks and colleagues already seated, preparing for the day. The first order of business? A comforting cup of coffee from the cafeteria’s trusty dispenser, strategically placed for easy access. With caffeine in hand, Adedayo takes a moment to sift through any urgent emails or messages that have landed overnight.

But that’s just the warm-up. Next up is diving into the performance metrics and data from yesterday’s news releases. This is all about making sure that what you read is not only engaging but also aligned with what’s happening in the world.

8:00 AM – 8:30 AM: Morning Huddle and Prioritizing

Time for a quick team huddle at 8 AM. Adedayo and the editorial team gather at the office boardroom to set the day’s priorities and discuss any challenges or updates. They also review the editorial calendar to make sure it lines up with upcoming events and hot topics.

    8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Storyline Coordination

Now, it’s time to coordinate with the editors. Adedayo works closely with them to finalize the lineup of news stories for the day’s app pushes. Each editor gets specific stories that match their expertise and workload.

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Keeping Tabs on Editors

With the stories assigned, Adedayo starts monitoring the editors’ progress as they get to work on drafting and preparing the news articles. Any questions or clarifications that pop up along the way are promptly addressed.

    Late Morning:

    10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

It’s time to put on the editor’s hat. Adedayo reviews and provides feedback on the draft articles submitted by the editors and domain experts. Quality control is key here, ensuring that the content aligns with the app’s editorial guidelines and maintains high standards.

    11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Multimedia Magic

Then Adedayo set up another meeting, in the boardroom, with the design and multimedia team. They’re responsible for gathering relevant images, videos, and graphics for the news articles. Collaboration with the tech team ensures these multimedia elements integrate smoothly into the app’s news pushes.

    Afternoon:

    12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch Time!

Adedayo savours this break in the cafeteria, appreciating the serene atmosphere – fresh flowers by the open window –  that provides a welcome escape from the office hustle. It’s a chance to catch up on industry news, and trends, and even engage with social media to gauge audience sentiment.

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM: The Editing Continues

After lunch, it’s back to the grind. Adedayo continues reviewing and editing articles, with a keen eye on accuracy, tone, and relevance. The final versions of the news stories are approved, and they work with the editors to schedule their publication throughout the day.

    2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Afternoon Adjustments

A quick check on the morning’s news pushes’ performance and any necessary adjustments to the afternoon content plan are made. It’s also a time to address any immediate issues or updates that may arise.

     Late Afternoon:

    3:00 PM – 4:30 PM

The focus shifts to managing the Hot News page of the app. Adedayo curates and updates the page with breaking news, trending stories, and engaging content to keep users hooked.

4:30 PM – 5:00 PM: Wrapping Up the Day

A final wrap-up meeting with the editors in their private office to discuss the day’s accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned. Expectations are set for the next day’s tasks and priorities.

    Evening:

    5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

As the sun starts to set on the workday, Adedayo takes a moment to review the overall performance of the day’s news pushes and Hot News page engagement. Any areas for improvement are identified, and strategies to enhance user engagement and app performance are brainstormed.

6:00 PM: The End of the Day

The workday wraps up, but not before Adedayo takes care of any remaining urgent emails or messages. A to-do list for the next day is created, prioritizing tasks and setting goals for the team.

And what’s the perfect way to wind down after a busy day? For Adedayo and colleagues, it’s a game of pool and some friendly darts competition in the Game Room. A little fun before heading home.

So, there you have it! A day in the life of a news editor like Adedayo is a whirlwind of coffee, coordination, and content creation. Behind every news article you read, there’s a dedicated team working tirelessly to bring you the latest updates. Cheers to the unsung heroes of the newsroom!
